Art Projects Gallery is delighted to present MUMBLE CRUMBLE, Hong Kong artist, Damon Tong’s highly anticipated 2nd solo exhibition, after his well-received show at Art Central 2019.
Tong is known for his use of the unconventional medium of custom-made stickers, inspired by the ubiquitous “Made In Hong Kong” stickers that he came across during his childhood in the 1970-80s as his family was in the garment business at that time.
Since the beginning, Tong’s works has been and continues to be wildly relevant to the evolving issues related to social, cultural and values in Hong Kong and the world. The fun and witty paradoxes that he creates through the manipulation of texts, subtexts, graphics and colours, contain powerful underlying messages and perspectives.
The focus on repetition and the mundane, anonymity, and cryptic characteristic of Tong’s works continues to be prevalent in the MUMBLE CRUMBLE works, in which the meanings and idea behind “word”, “speech” and “message” get lost in the noise of society and hidden agendas in the world today. The work encourages a different way of “seeing” to better understand the world around us.
In these new works, the use of stickers seems to take on a different philosophical meaning from his earlier works, with each piece of sticker now seemingly portray the power of the individual to complete the whole picture.
Born in Hong Kong in 1979, Damon Tong received his Bachelor of Art degree in Fine Art from the Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology University (co-presented with the Hong Kong Art School) in 2008 and his Master of Visual Arts from the Hong Kong Baptist University in 2013. He is also a member of Rental United, an artist trio established in 2009, which is known for their participatory practices.
Artist’s Statement
“The first rule of Fight Club is: You do not talk about Fight Club. The second rule of Fight Club is: You do not talk about Fight Club.”
This is my favourite line from the movie “Fight Club”. I’ve always thought the line only suggests if something is so important you need to repeat twice. Only until recently, I found out it is also the hidden reference to the DID (dissociative identity disorder) condition of the main characters.
